Cairns FC Media Release
31 August 2018
NPL Licence

Following a successful 2018 season the board of directors of Cairns FC have made the difficult decision to hand back the club’s NPL licence.

Despite the best efforts of the club, sponsors, coaching staff, players, volunteers and supporters, the board of Cairns FC have not been able to harness sufficient support to deliver a financially sustainable NPL model for the region.

The current directors were appointed at the end of the 2017 season. At this stage the former board were on the cusp of relinquishing the licence for the region due to financial and operational difficulties. Over the past 12 months the current board have put all their energies into developing a financially sustainable NPL model for the region.

During the 2018 season the club has had many highlights including:

1. Providing NPL experience for 8 local juniors.
2. The Cairns FC U14 boys team going through the Mackay Community Cup undefeated and 8 Cairns FC players making Queensland train on teams.
3. Reaching the Round of 16 in the FFA Cup and bringing Sydney FC to Cairns where a crowd of 4,000 got to experience a great night of football and $8,000 was raised for drought relief.

Despite this success, and the best efforts of all parties, the board was not able to develop a sustainable NPL model for 2019 and beyond. The club ran at a significant loss for 2018 and was not able to attract sufficient support for our junior programs.

Once the prospect of handling back the NPL licence became likely the board commenced working with Football Queensland to ensure appropriate development pathways were in place for junior and senior players in the region into the future.

Football Queensland have provided a commitment to the board that they will invest to ensure programs to support player pathways are in place for 2019. Football Queensland have also made a commitment to allow the region to re-enter the NPL in future years if a sustainable licence model is developed.

The board of Cairns FC believe that under the new leadership at Football Queensland, headed by CEO Richard Griffiths, the region will see many positive outcomes going forward that previously would not have been possible.

The club would like to thank all of our supporters, sponsors, Cairns Regional Council, players, coaching staff, local clubs who have supported us and our hardworking volunteers for their support which has made our success in 2018 possible.

Making Moves in Mackay: Northern Tri-Series

Cairns FC made a great showing in the Northern Tri-Series games (26-27 May) hosted by Magpies Crusaders United in Mackay. It was a great opportunity for the players to live and play as a group in a professional environment, as our Talent Support Program starts to gain some momentum. Pleasing to see that players are now starting to take interest in the potential of state representation, particularly in the U13 & U14 age groups. Ken Mitchell, the U14 QLD Country State Coach has shown considerable interest in several of the U14 players for consideration for the National Championships to be played in October.

We would like to thank all the players for their excellent representation. The feedback from the hotel and the bus company was very positive. We'd like to also thank our amazing coaching staff, team managers and supporting parents who travelled to Mackay. This provided an excellent opportunity for a dry run as we prepare for the FQ Community Cup, to be held in Mackay during July school holidays.

The upcoming Tri-Series events will now be centralised in Townsville to reduce travel & accommodation costs. A reminder that these dates are Sun 17 June, Sun 29 July, Sun 12 Aug, where we'll play double headers in one day.

From NPL News Australia's page:

Last night Cairns FC took on Gold Coast United FC at Barlow Park, Cairns.

In what was a huge win for the club off pitch, Cairns FC boasted a home attendance of 1378 for the opening round. To put things in perspective, this figure exceeds the Asian Champions League crowd of Brisbane Roar FC vs Ceres-Negros FC by almost 100 people. Further, it exceeds the lowest two all-time A-League attendances by a long shot.

2010-2011, NQ Fury v Brisbane Roar, Skilled Park Gold Coast - 1003
2011-2012, GCU v CCM, Skilled Park Gold Coast - 1141

It was great to be a part of the atmosphere at Barlow and shows that semi-professional football is on the rise. No need to wait for "The Championship". The clubs exist now in the National Premier Leagues and need your support! Get out and support your club!

Cairns FC Youth Squad

19 JANUARY 2018

This season Cairns FC will integrate a Youth Squad for 15-20yr males into our NPL Academy structure to work alongside our senior squad for the 2018 season and beyond. The Youth Squad will be coached by our Senior Coach Danny Graystone and the club’s Technical Director Mark Boyd. Both coaches are AFC A-Licenced full-time professionals, with exceptional coaching experience and background and are committed to ongoing youth development within Far North Queensland.

Youth Squad players will work with Cairns FC coaching staff regularly on (Mon & Wed evenings), playing in competitive internal & external fixtures and will be trained with the same philosophy as our NPL Senior Program. Players will continue to represent their FNQ Premier League clubs on a weekly basis but also play select matches against regional NPL clubs in Mackay & Townsville. Players will be consistently monitored by Cairns FC NPL coaching staff, local club senior coaches and regularly assessed by the club’s medical staff to ensure that player training loads, injuries and over-training is reduced.

Players will be provided with regular assessment, feedback and consideration of their suitability for NPL selection or future professional/semi-professional career options in the game. In addition to this, Youth Squad players will be provided access to the club’s physiotherapists, remedial therapists and podiatrists to ensure they are receiving professional medical support during the season.

We are presently working towards finalising additional playing opportunities post-season for an end of season tournament with options either within Australia or overseas. The object of the Youth Squad is to bridge the gap for Cairns players between our Junior NPL Academy Squads and the Senior NPL team. This will be done by providing them with a High-Performance coaching environment and links to A-League Clubs such as Brisbane Roar, Central Coast Mariners, Sydney FC and Newcastle Jets. Our drive is to assist with their development into senior football, either for Cairns FC, FNQ League clubs or A-League Youth programs.

TRIALS for the Youth Squad commence Wed 24th Jan, Mon 29th Jan & Wed 31st Jan at Woree SHS (entry off Pool Close, Woree) from 6.30–7.45pm. Trialing Youth Players may also be considered for potential inclusion for remaining squad spots with the 2018 Cairns FC Senior NPL Squad. Register here to Trial.
